Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU)

Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU), the Society of Uilleann Pipers, was founded in 1968, when fewer than 100 uilleann pipers remained. Its work supports access, education, performance and preservation, helping people discover and sustain the instrument’s tradition.

Tuition and pipemaking

NPU provides regular tuition from its restored Georgian premises at 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin, unveiled in January 2007. Its educational work also includes publications and recordings for players and learners.

PipeCraft, established in 2011, provides specialist training in uilleann pipemaking, responding to demand for instruments and the skilled craftspeople who make them. Contact NPU or consult its classes information for current tuition opportunities.

Heritage and inclusion

NPU is accredited by UNESCO as a competent non-governmental organisation in intangible cultural heritage. It advocated for Ireland’s ratification of the UNESCO convention; uilleann piping was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2017.

In 2023, NPU received the Diversity Silver Award from the Irish Centre for Diversity. Its principal funders have included the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and Dublin City Council.
