Ulster Scottish Pipe Band Traces Its Beginnings to Philadelphia in 1922, When It Was Founded as the Philadelphia Ulster Pipe Band.

Updated

Ulster Scottish Pipe Band is a competitive pipe band based in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. John A. Hall, Sr. founded it in 1922 as the Philadelphia Ulster Pipe Band after immigrating from Northern Ireland.

History and leadership

Generations of the Hall and Cooper families have sustained the band’s Scotch-Irish musical traditions. Long-serving Pipe Major Thomas Hall was followed by David Hall and, in 2018, Pipe Major Eric Ouellette. Traci Cooper manages the band, and Derek Cooper leads the drum corps.

World champions

Ulster Scottish won the Grade 2 World Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow in 2026. The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association subsequently promoted the band to Grade 1 for the 2027 competition season.
