Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming
British Army Centre of Excellence Providing Military Piping and Highland Drumming Instruction at All Levels in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Updated
The Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming is the British Army’s centre of excellence for military piping and Highland drumming. Based at Inchdrewer House near Redford Barracks in Edinburgh, it provides training for pipers and drummers serving in eligible Army regiments with pipes and drums.
Instruction ranges from initial training to advanced piper, drummer, Drum Major, and Pipe Major courses. The 22-week foundation course introduces practice chanter and drum-pad technique, music reading and writing, instrumental skills, drill, and the standards required to perform with a military pipes and drums unit.
The school also monitors musical standards across Army units and coordinates joint pipes and drums events, including participation in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Its programs are military training opportunities rather than general public lessons.
Read the British Army feature, Playing the Army’s Pipes and Drums, for an introduction to the training and performance opportunities.
